gempa GmbH has its registered office in Potsdam, Germany, and exists since January 2009. gempa GmbH emerged from gempa GbR founded in June 2008. gempa GbR was hived off the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam and employs some of the scientists of the GITEWS (German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System) project, which developed the earthquake-real-time-processing system SeisComP3.

The founders, Dr. Bernd Weber and information scientist Jan Becker, are responsible for coordinating and running the software development for the GITEWS and the NEAMTWS (North East Atlantic Mediterranean Tsunami Warning System), as well as supervising the SeisComP3 systems of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam and its partners in South East Asia and Europe (e.g BMG/Indonesien, INCOIS/Indien, NMC/Malediven, IGN/Spanien, EMSC/Frankreich, IMP/Portugal).

The supervision includes training courses for users and the development of standard operation procedures.

The area of research, originally focused on the real-time processing of seismological data, has been extended in the course of the year 2008 to other areas of Tsunami Early Warning Systems, like the processing of real time data from tide gauges.
